Get Moving!

~
More notes from the RT Convention in New Orleans last week:
You have to get out of your comfort zone
Writers are introverts “INFJ”
Promoters are exact opposite “ESTP”
Face time with an agent or publisher will not make your book better, but it will make you stand out in a crowd.
Who is in charge of your story? YOU. No one else cares about it more than you.
Goals: where do you want to be in 3-5 years?
  • If you set a goal and miss it, that’s OK. If you don’t set a goal, you are guaranteed not to achieve it.
  • Write it down!
Write in 3’s (3 books)
Make your characters different from the average
Who is your audience?  Be there!  Young, old, women, men – go where they go – Facebook, blogs, forums, bookstores, writer’s groups, sex toy conventions!
What do you not do well? Focus on that. The other stuff is easy
  • characters
  • plot
  • details
  • continuity
Figure out how you write
  • outline?
  • seat of your pants?
  • Work with your style –
    • collage on the wall with loose index cards to move around
    • spreadsheet with eveything carefully laid out
There are too many options for almost everything
  • Just because it is available doesn’t mean you have to take it or that it is a good idea
  • Don’t get so afraid of the wrong choice that you make no choice at all.
How change happenes:
  • moment of enlightenment
  • decision (eeek! Don’t make the wrong choice!)
  • sustained action – the hardest part for many people
Only 5% of people are capable of self-motivated change
Luck happens to the person with the manuscript in her hand
One constant: FEAR
  • failure
  • success (90% of requested manuscripts don’t get sent)
  • starting
  • finishing
  • criticism
  • wrong decision
  • not good enough
  • “imposter syndrome” – everyone thinks that everyone else is better and doing better
Remember: images are more powerful than words or people.
Tomorrow:  Vanilla Erotica (you don’t need whips and chains to sell good books)
